The Lord Mayor for the City of Stoke-on-Trent 2014/15 is Councillor Majid Khan. The Lord Mayor is the First Citizen of Stoke-on-Trent, and with this comes a high profile role in promoting and maintaining the interests of the city and its people. The Lord Mayor attends a variety of engagements throughout his year in office, such as Civic Receptions, Parades and general visits. The Councillor & Civic Support Team of which the Lord Mayor's Secretariat is a part supports him in this role, and can also offer advice on relevant points of etiquette, procedure and precedence.
Majid Khan was born in Pakistan (Azad Kashmir) and first came to the UK in 1971. He came here to join his father (Amir Zaman-deceased) and mother (Fatima Bibi-deceased) and younger brother. They all lived in Bradford and Majid attended school there. However after leaving school he started out in the catering industry. Majid was very keen and managed to become a chef within 6 months. He then moved to Stoke on Trent in 1983 to set up his own catering business and has lived here ever since. Majid was married in 1985 to Shahida Parveen Khan and have 5 children, 3 daughters and two sons. Samaira, Tahira, Sameeya, Shazad and Mosin and one grandson; Mahir. All Majid’s working life, up until 2010, was spent successfully in the catering business; he then handed the business over to his sons to look after.
Majid was first elected as a councillor in 2010 (Tunstall) and then re elected the following year for the 4 year term representing Etruria and Hanley ward. He has served on the audit committee, children and young people’s committee, adults and neighbourhoods committee. He was president and vice president for a number of years of the Islamic centre mosque committee, and still a member of the executive committee. Also Majid is the founder and chair of the Muslim funeral association and has done a lot of voluntary work with charities locally.
Majid will be supported in the year of office by his two daughters Tahira and Sameeya who will be sharing the role of Lady Mayoress between them.
