The Mayor of Rochdale (2003) is Councillor Sultan Ali. The Mayoress is his wife, Shamim Akhtar. Councillor Sultan Ali was born in Sahiwal, Pakistan. He has lived in Rochdale since 1970 and has been a member of the Council since 1996. In the past, he has served on the Housing and Recreation & Community Services committees and was Vice-Chair of the External Partnership Overview & Scrutiny Panel in 2002-03.
Away from the Town Hall, Councillor Ali works for the Probation Service and is a Governor at Spotland Primary and Falinge Park schools. His hobbies include badminton, walking and reading.
Councillor Ali has been married to Shamim Akhtar for 19 years and, and the couple has three daughters and two sons.
Mrs Akhtar is also from Sahiwal. A full-time housewife and mother, she enjoys dressmaking and is currently taking classes to improve her English.
